Renting a scooter in Formentera is undoubtedly one of the best ways to explore the island: total freedom, easy parking, and the chance to discover hidden beaches and corners at your own pace. However, despite the island’s laid-back vibe, there are traffic rules you must follow, and ignoring them can lead to costly fines.
Knowing and following local driving regulations is essential to enjoy a smooth, stress-free holiday. In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know to avoid fines while riding a scooter in Formentera.
1. Respect Speed Limits
It may sound obvious, but many drivers let their guard down while on vacation and overlook speed limits. In Formentera, speed limits are clearly marked and are generally low due to the island’s small size and narrow roads.
- In urban areas: max 30 km/h (sometimes even 20 km/h)
- On open roads: 50–70 km/h depending on the section
Exceeding the speed limit can result in fines ranging from €100 to over €300, and in certain cases, points may be deducted from your license (if you're an EU license holder).
2. Do Not Drive on Protected Trails or Beaches
Formentera is home to several protected natural areas, such as the Ses Salines Natural Park, where driving outside authorized roads is strictly forbidden. Even if unintentional, entering a restricted area can lead to fines of over €1,000.
Driving on unmarked dirt tracks or on sandy beaches is also prohibited. Respecting the environment is a responsibility all visitors should take seriously.
3. Park Only in Designated Areas
Parking in unauthorized spots is one of the most common causes of fines for tourists. Even though scooters are easier to park, there are rules you must follow:
- Don’t park on sidewalks or pedestrian zones
- Don’t block entrances to homes or shops
- Don’t park in areas reserved for residents or authorized vehicles
In popular areas like Es Pujols, La Savina, and Sant Francesc, there are clearly marked parking zones for scooters. Be sure to use them.
4. Wearing a Helmet Is Mandatory (and Saves Lives)
Even for short trips or in hot weather, helmets are always required—both for the rider and the passenger. In addition to avoiding a fine (at least €200), it's a crucial safety measure.
At La Savina Moto Rent, we provide certified helmets free of charge, so there’s no excuse not to ride safely and legally.
5. Only Ride If You Have the Proper License
To rent and ride a scooter in Formentera, you must have a valid license for the type of vehicle. For 125cc scooters, you’ll need:
- An A1 or A license, or a B license held for more than 3 years
- If you're using a foreign license, it must be valid and, if not in Spanish, it may need an official translation or an international driving permit
Riding without the appropriate license is a serious offense, and in case of an accident, your insurance might not cover the damages.
6. Alcohol and Drugs: Zero Tolerance
As in the rest of Spain, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited and heavily penalized. Random checkpoints are common during the summer months, and the fines can be substantial.
The legal alcohol limit is 0.25 mg/l in breath. A single beer or glass of wine can easily exceed this. The best rule: if you drive, don’t drink.
7. Always Carry the Required Documents
Make sure to always have the following on you:
- Your driving license
- Rental contract
- Vehicle documents (we’ll provide these when you pick up your scooter)
Failing to present these in a police check could lead to delays or even fines, wasting valuable time from your vacation.
8. Watch Out for Regulated Zones with Limited Access
During the high season, Formentera limits vehicle access in certain areas, especially in protected zones or places with high traffic. If you rent a scooter during this period, don't worry: at La Savina Moto Rent, we take care of all necessary permits and paperwork, so you can ride freely and legally.
Riding a scooter in Formentera is a fun, convenient, and budget-friendly way to discover the island—but it’s important to do it responsibly. Fines can ruin your trip, but they are completely avoidable if you follow a few simple rules.
